Politics: Which Side is For the People?

So, I hate US bipartisan politics and what they have become. “You say this and I’ll say that” should be the motto or maybe something like, “Without logic. We are unbound.”
Something interesting about Democrats is that they believe big government should take care of the people because those people are too stupid to take care of themselves. On the other retarded hand are the Republicans who, though often are seen as hard-nosed and business-minded, believe the citizens can take of themselves pretty well if you give them space to figure it out. That is, Republicans believe the people of the United States are smart enough to take care of themselves.
Where political decisions are concerned, I believe the idea of “by the people” is gone and has little-to-zero chance of returning but there is still a chance to do things “for the people”. Which side do you think is “for the people”?
